Evidence
Except where noted, information for this family comes from James William Hook6, who cites his evidence. There are two major exceptions: First, Hook assumed that James Hook’s daughter Mary, whose birth is recorded in Church records, and Margaret, who married Thomas Fee, were the same person. He did not state a reason, but it appears that he was bothered by the fact that he could not find a birth record for Margaret. If he had studied other families in this neighborhood he would have realized that missing birth records are common. Mary and Margaret appear to be separate persons and I am treating them as such until evidence proves otherwise.

Second, because of Benjamin Thrasher’s gift of a dark bay mare to James Hook’s son, James William Hook speculated that James Hook’s wife, Margaret, may have been the daughter or sister of Benjamin Thrasher. However, he knew very little about Benjamin Thrasher. He did not know the names of Benjamin’s children, Benjamin’s apparent age, or the lack of any record indicating that Benjamin had a sister in America. It appears that James Hook’s daughter, Mary, was the wife of Benjamin Thrasher. That explains the gift of the dark bay mare.

An account of the estate of “James Hook late of Prince Georges County” can also be found in the Administration Accounts, Maryland State Archives, Book 17, p. 170. After the list of assets is the statement “May the 27th 1739 came Margarett Hook .... This finall acct. the children of the deceased are of full age to receive their parts thereof.” The signatures of James Hook and John Hook are not present.132 Since those signatures are lacking, this seems to be a different copy of the inventory than that abstracted by James William Hook.
